Layoffs, Layoffs & More Layoffs

Be prepared to unexpectedly lose your job

This week, video platform Vimeo announced that they have cut 6% of their staff. Other companies have also announced layoffs, including Tesla, Netflix, Twitter, Coinbase, Next Insurance, Hopin, Victoria’s Secret, and more.

Last week, The Mom Project laid off 54 employees. According to reports, the employees learned they were out of a job when they couldn’t log in to their work email or Slack. Rather, they received an email at their personal email address. There’s clearly a right way—and a wrong way—to lay off employees and this way fell short.

Even if you’re laid off the right way (with proper notification), it still hurts. And layoffs are ramping up. Forbes reports thousands of recent layoffs. Employers are also rescinding job and internship offers. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reports job cuts were 58.8% higher than June 2021, and were 57% higher than in May.

Despite the fact that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 11.3 million available jobs in May, that doesn’t mean those jobs are necessarily a fit for the workers who have been laid off. It isn’t always that easy to get hired, even in a strong job market.

What’s most important, especially given that anyone can be hit with a surprise layoff when they don’t expect it, is to be ready for a job search. If you have your resume updated and ready to go, spiff up your LinkedIn profile and build your network, and explore the top job sites to see what jobs are out there, it will be easier to get started on a job search in a hurry if it happens to you.

Here are some tips for getting ready to job search, even when you don’t need to right now.
